Missouri’s Medicaid Program
MOHEALTHNET IS UNDER THREAT
Congress is considering drastic federal cuts to Medicaid — a move that would gut MO HealthNet and threaten health coverage for more than 1.2 million Missourians.
If these cuts pass, Missouri would be forced to either raise state taxes or pull state funding from other essential services – like schools, public safety, and infrastructure – just to cover the funding shortfall.
Join us in standing up for Missouri’s families and essential services — before it’s too late.
Who MOHealthNet Serves
MOHealthNet is the backbone of health care in Missouri — covering about 1,223,000 Missouri Residents. That’s 20% of the state population.
Here’s who depends on it:
Children: 36% of all Missouri children are covered by Medicaid.
Adults: 13% of Medicaid enrollees are non-disabled, working-age adults and 71% of them are employed, many in essential jobs without health benefits
Adults with Disabilities: 36% of working-age Missourians living with disabilities are covered by Medicaid.
Nursing Home Residents: 65% of nursing home residents in Missouri rely on Medicaid for long-term care.
What’s At Stake
Missouri receives nearly $13 billion in Medicaid funding annually, making up 70% of the MO HealthNet budget. Because of a state constitutional amendment, Missouri is required to replace any lost federal funding to MO HealthNet. That means:
A Terrible Choice: Higher Taxes or Defunding Public Services: State lawmakers would have to decide either to raise taxes or cut funding from other essential services — like public schools, first responders, and infrastructure — just to keep state programs running.
Loss of Rural Care:The proposed cuts to MO HealthNet could cause rural hospitals and clinics to face financial collapse, cutting off vital care to entire regions of the state, and 1 in 4 rural residents.
Higher Health Care Costs & Longer Waits: Losing access to regular preventative care will mean more emergency visits, higher provider costs, and a strain on the entire health care system.
Urgent Action: Stop the Cuts
Federal lawmakers are deciding Missouri’s Medicaid future right now. There’s no time to wait — tell your legislators that health care is not optional.
