Across the country, state lawmakers like us are bracing as the federal government considers a bill that will throw state budgets into chaos and add red tape that our social service agencies do not have the capacity to administer. If the budget reconciliation bill passes Congress in anything like its current form, we will be left to deal with the fallout.

Despite claims that work requirements would encourage employment, the reality is that most Medicaid recipients already work. According to recent data, 92% of Medicaid adults and 90% of Medi-Cal adults under 65 are employed, in school, or caring for others or living with disabilities that prevent full-time work.

And one, giant St. John’s Community Health— which has provided care to the region’s working class and immigrants for 60 years — is launching a campaign to call out congressional Republicans it believes are enabling Trump budget cuts that they believe will cripple healthcare for the poor.
